There were still some outstanding performances. His 44 overs against Somerset to take 7 wickets for 93 recalled his best days and he also took five wickets in an innings against Middlesex and Hampshire. In his 52nd year his stamina seemed as good as ever but, with new spinners coming through the ranks in John Mortimore and Brian Wells he felt it was time to finish. His 2979 first-class wickets are, and seem likely to remain, the fifth greatest number ever taken by a bowler.
