Perhaps some falling off was inevitable. His wickets fell from 238 to 125 and his average increased from 19.59 to 21.49. Nevertheless these were still very good returns for a man in his 48th year and it was the fourteenth consecutive season in which he had taken 100 wickets. There were still some outstanding analyses. He took 11 for 165 against Sussex at Eastbourne and 11 for 133 against the same County at Bristol. He took 6 for 16 in Nottinghamshire’s second innings at Cheltenham and, altogether, he captured five wickets in an innings on ten occasions and ten wickets in a match twice. As a batsman he scored 263 runs in 35 innings and he held eleven catches. At the end of the season he had taken 2600 wickets in his career and those who thought his powers were waning would have been surprised to know that he would take a further 379 before he hung up his boots for the last time.
