The next highest wicket-taker in the country was Doug. Wright of Kent and he was well behind with 177 victims. Goddard took 222 wickets for his County, alone, in all matches equalling the record he had set back in 1937. No bowler has approached this figure since and, with the reduction in County matches since Goddard’s day this record is likely to stand for all time. A few outstanding performances must be mentioned – 15 for 81 against Nottinghamshire, 15 for 134 against Leicestershire, 15 for 156 against Middlesex, and 12 for 65 against Somerset. He took hat-tricks against Glamorgan at Swansea and against Somerset at Bristol. He finished third in the national bowling averages. Probably his age weighed against his Test selection this year – he could hardly be seen as a long-term prospect. As a batsman he scored 326 runs in 47 innings and he held 13 catches.
