In the 1946 season he took 150 wickets for Gloucestershire in the Championship and 177 in all fixtures, more than any one else in the country apart from Eric Hollies of Warwickshire. At times he was nearly unplayable and he took five wickets in an innings twelve times and ten in a match on six occasions. Highlights were 13 for 61 against Northamptonshire at Peterborough, 11 for 75 against Glamorgan at Bristol, 14 for 169 against Essex at Brentwood and 13 for 127 against Surrey at Cheltenham.
