The 1938 season, though, turned out to be an unlucky one for him. He fractured his thumb in May and missed a number of Gloucestershire’s games. He also missed selection for the first Test – his County colleague Reg Sinfield played and got Bradman out. Selected in the squad to play at Old Trafford in the third Test, the match never got under way with all four days being washed out. Although in the squad for the fourth Test at Headingley, Goddard did not make the final eleven which may have been a mistake as Australia’s spinners won the match. All this meant that Goddard played in only 20 Championship games and his wickets dropped from 248 for the season to 114 with his average increasing from 16.76 to 23.02. He still had some outstanding performances taking thirteen wickets in the matches against Kent and Worcestershire and twelve against Hampshire and Middlesex. As a batsman he scored only 133 runs in 27 innings. He made eight catches. At the end of the season he was selected to tour South Africa with the MCC team in the winter of 1938/39.
