Only two other bowlers, Freeman of Kent and Verity of Yorkshire took more wickets in the season. Eighteen times he took five wickets in an innings and seven times did he take ten wickets in a match. Among outstanding performances were 11-101 against Derbyshire at Chesterfield, 12-140 against Worcestershire at Cheltenham, 11-105 against Warwickshire at Edgbaston , 8-77 against Yorkshire at Gloucester and 10-64 against Hampshire at Bournemouth, including 4-8 off 14.1 overs in the second innings.
