He topped the Gloucestershire averages taking 159 wickets in Championship matches alone. He was often called upon to do a lot of bowling, 58 overs against Yorkshire, 61 against Nottinghamshire, 59 against Warwickshire and 60.5 against Lancashire. Only three bowlers bowled more overs than the 1316 he sent down that summer. He frequently carried the Gloucestershire attack as Charlie Parker was not quite as effective as normal. He took five wickets in an innings fourteen times and ten wickets in a match on six occasions. But, perhaps, he got more pleasure out of making his highest first-class score and maiden fifty in the match against Essex at Southend-on-Sea. He hit 71 in eighty minutes out 26
