The selectors were desperate to find a bowler to curb the run getting of Bradman who had hit scores of 131, 254, and 334 in the first three Tests. In the event Goddard did not bowl a ball at him but he performed tidily enough taking the wickets of Fairfax and Hornibrook for 49 runs in 32.1 overs. It was not enough to get him selected for the fifth Test and he was not to play for England again for seven years. In the Championship Goddard took 131 wickets at 18.92 and, with Parker (162 wickets at 11.90), nearly bowled Gloucestershire to the Championship. They won 15 matches as against only 10 won by the Champions, (Lancashire). Under the system then in vogue, eight points were awarded for a win and five for a lead on first innings and Lancashire had secured first innings lead on eight occasions to Gloucestershire’s two and so finished up as Champions by just 3 points. As they had decisively won the encounter at Gloucester early in the season this was, perhaps, a fair result. Goddard took a hat-trick against Glamorgan at Swansea, W.E.Jones and F.P.Ryan caught and J.Mercer bowled. He took five wickets in an innings ten times including 5/52 in the first innings of the epic tied match against the Australians at Bristol. Twice he took ten wickets or more in a match. He scored 191 runs with the bat in 35 innings and held 13 catches. A fine season ended with his selection to tour South Africa with the MCC side in the winter of 1930/31.
