He developed his off-spin in the nets at Lord’s and when the 1929 season started he was ready to show the cricket world what he could do in this new form of attack. Whereas he had taken only 153 wickets in six seasons at an average of 34.07 he was now to take a further 2826 wickets at 19.07 in the rest of his career, taking 100 wickets or more every season until 1950. 1929 In 1929 Goddard sprang to prominence with a total of 184 wickets in the season at an average of 16.38 which put him into sixth place in the national averages. Re-engaged by Gloucestershire to replace P.T.Mills who had gone to coach at Radley College, Goddard accepted his opportunity with both hands, forming a deadly spin partnership with Charlie Parker. The pair were to take 284 wickets in the Championship with Goddard capturing 154 at 15.97. He was the first bowler to obtain 100 wickets in the season, achieving this feat against Leicestershire at Bristol in June. Against Cambridge University at Victoria Ground, Cheltenham, he was practically unplayable taking 9 wickets for 21 in 13
