He had one five wicket haul, against Leicestershire at Hinckley and he was often heavily punished, 0-116 against Surrey at Kennington Oval, 0-132 against Essex at Greenbank, Bristol, 0-81 off 20 overs against Lancashire at Old Trafford and 1-76 off 15 overs against the New Zealanders at Cheltenham. He was not making sufficient progress as a fast bowler and it was time to think seriously about the future. As a batsman he hit 147 runs in 24 innings and as a fielder he held eleven catches.
