The loss of what was to be six years meant that he was too old for the full rigours of a cricket season when the county programme was resumed in 1946. Paynter played in two of the three Test Matches against the visiting West Indians without conspicuous success and was dropped for the final game of the series. He performed well enough at county level and scored over seventeen hundred runs in the Championship with four centuries. The advent of war curtailed the first-class programme otherwise he might well have reached his two thousand aggregate with the help of some Festival appearances. He captained the Players at Lord’s. 28
