His most outstanding performance was a magnificent 243 in the Third Test at Durban when he hit twenty four fours and put on 242 runs in 178 minutes for the third wicket with his captain W.R.Hammond. This remains the highest individual score made by an England batsman against South Africa. He also added 115 with P.A.Gibb for the second wicket. This splendid innings followed centuries in each innings of the First Test. He finished the tour with innings of 62 and 75 in the famous timeless Test at Durban.
