In the First Test at Trent Bridge he scored a splendid 216 not out, one of four centurions in England’s total of 658-8d, their then highest total against Australia although later surpassed at The Oval. Paynter’s innings contained one six and twenty-six fours. This was the highest individual score made by an England batsman against Australia in this country beating the 182 made by Philip Mead in 1921. Strangely this record was to be surpassed by three other batsmen later in the series, Hammond, 240 at Lord’s, Leyland 187 and Hutton 364 at The Oval. Paynter put on 206 for the fifth wicket with Denis Compton. In only his third first-class innings of the season he made his second highest score in first-class cricket, 291 against Hampshire at Southampton. After an excellent performance in the Second Test at Lord’s where he made 99 and 43 his next three innings were somewhat of a disappointment and he failed to trouble the scorer in England’s mammoth total of 903-7d in the final Test. He finished the season with 2691 runs which included eight centuries and was never anything but an automatic choice for the winter tour to South Africa, his first overseas cricket for six years.
