Undoubtedly the highlight of his summer was a truly magnificent innings of 322, all made on the same day against Sussex at Hove in late July. Altogether he hit three sixes and thirty nine fours and put on 268 runs with Cyril Washbrook in 162 minutes, He also added 271 runs in a third wicket partnership with Norman Oldfield. This was Paynter’s only triple century in first-class cricket. His score was at the time the highest by a Lancashire professional. Lancashire made 640 runs on the first day of the match. He also played another high scoring innings of 266 against Essex at Old Trafford, hitting four sixes and twenty fours. His excellent form this year regained him a place in the Test side against the visiting New Zealanders and he acquitted himself quite favourably making 74 in his only innings at Lord’s and scoring 33 and 7 on his home ground of Old Trafford. He also appeared for Players v Gentlemen at Lord’s. 22
