Although he did not regain his Test place for any of the three games against the touring West Indians he had a reasonably satisfactory season and made his highest first-class score to date, 176 at Fenner’s against Cambridge University. This was his only hundred of the summer but he reached the half century on nine occasions. He returned the best bowling figures of his career, 3-13 v Sussex at Hove.
