In the early part of the season he put together several good scores including three centuries by the middle of June. His 153 for Lancashire against the All India tourists gave particular pleasure and it was no surprise when he was chosen for the only Test Match of the summer, the first ever meeting of England and India. He made 14 and 54. Although there was a slight falling away in his run scoring overall he made two more centuries and reached a seasonal aggregate of 2035, by far his best to date, and his season’s record was enough to gain him a much coveted place on the MCC touring side to Australia and New Zealand.
