Ward claimed 11-121 in his first game of the season, Grimmett who began well with 3-21, being unable to continue bowling after suffering an injured knee. He then claimed 5-103 against New South Wales and 9-154 in the match, a game however dominated by a magnificent 9-41 in O’Reilly’s first innings and 5-57 in the second. Against Victoria Grimmett again claimed 6-95, but once again Fleetwood-Smith with 9-135 took the major honours. Subsequently Grimmett failed to secure more than three wickets in any further innings and although he ended the season with 41 wickets at 20.60, he failed to gain a place in the 1938 touring party. O’Reilly with 64 at 12.25, Fleetwood-Smith with 64 at 22.43 and Ward with 51 at 21.56 were all successful but many were disappointed that Grimmett, even aged 46, had failed to earn a fourth tour to England. In the game against Queensland at Brisbane, Grimmett added 100 for the ninth wicket with R.G.Williams. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 221.
