In effect Grimmett in addition to competition from O’Reilly and Fleetwood-Smith also had to contend with the arrival of Ward, a South Australian spin bowler. In fact it took Grimmett until the fifth game to take five wickets, 6-64 against New South Wales at Adelaide, and this was against a side lacking a considerable number of Test players. It proved to be the only one of the season and his least effective performance since joining South Australia in 1924/25. Ward proved his worth with 12-227 in his opening fixture, following this with 10-177 against MCC and 6-107 against Victoria. He appeared in the first three Tests, whilst Fleetwood-Smith played in the last three alongside the ever-present O’Reilly, which ended with England losing out by three Tests to two. All three were to take more wickets than Grimmett whose 48 wickets cost 30.06. He gave a better performance in Sheffield Shield games, taking 30 at 25.16 each, but it was still his worst appearance since 1926-27. His one consolation came on February 19, 1937 when his dismissal of L.C.Hynes of New South Wales gave him his four hundredth wicket in 47
