Ponsford, Woodfull, Ironmonger and Blackie retired, Bradman played no part as a result of recuperation from illness and McCabe and O’Reilly also made few appearances. Grimmett however appeared in seven matches, including all Sheffield Shield fixtures, taking a total of 58 wickets at 20.94, only L.O.Fleetwood-Smith with 63 at 20.34 possessing more although Grimmett was still the only bowler with over 300 overs. After beginning with 5-64 in the benefit game between Richardson and Woodfull, he proved highly successful against Queensland, taking 11- 232 in their opening game, only to beat this in the return game at Adelaide with figures of 9-180 and 7-109. His total of 16-289 was the second-best return in Sheffield Shield matches after G.Giffen’s 16-168 in 1894/95 for South Australia against New South Wales. Grimmett was also able to take the wicket of all eleven batsmen in the match. His other successful match was against New South Wales, also at Adelaide, when he claimed 7-90 in the second innings, giving him match figures of 11-230. Unfortunately he was able to bowl only one over against Victoria, the consequence of gastritis. Altogether he took 49 wickets at only 21.28 in Sheffield Shield games, the second highest in the competition after Fleetwood-Smith who broke all records with 60 wickets at 18.95.
