It was the beginning of a fascinating performance against a West Indian team who had never before played against this type of bowler. For South Australia against the West Indians, they recovered from 4/53 with a stand of 97, Grimmett scoring fifty, before taking 5-43 in their second innings to win by ten wickets. He then took 11-183 in the first Test, including 7-87 in the first innings to register another ten wickets victory. A further five in the next two games against New South Wales (5-180) and Queensland (5-31) followed before two further wins in the Test series, Grimmett taking 5-49 to win the Third Test. In the course of the latter game, Grimmett reached his hundredth Test wicket when he claimed the wicket of G.N.Francis caught behind the wicket by W.A.S.Oldfield. A further five wickets were secured in the second game against the Tourists, including 54 in the first innings, South Australia scraping home by one wicket before the final two Tests with West Indies, which ended with a surprise defeat in the Fifth. In the twenty-one innings in which he bowled, he only failed to take a wicket on one occasion. Altogether he took 74 wickets at 19.14 during the season, once again the highest number in the country. His three Shield games produced 19 at 18.52, this including the two-hundredth wicket of his career in this competition when he clean bowled A.F.Kippax for New South Wales in their first innings against South Australia at Adelaide. At Test level Grimmett also ended with the highest number of wickets, his 33 costing 17.96 apiece with Ironmonger being the most successful with 22 at 14.68 apiece.
