Famous Cricketers No 96 - Clarrie Grimmett
in the First and five for 102 in the Fourth. Although taking 23 wickets in the series at 44.52, it had not been a highly successful occasion. In a match dominated by England batsmen, he conceded 1024 runs in the series, beating the 999 by Mailey in 1924/25. He had conceded over 100 runs in 6 of the first seven Test innings in 1928/29, the other being 96, his 191 runs at Sydney beating Mailey’s earlier 186 at Melbourne in 1924/25, which remained a record until subsequently beaten by Fleetwood-Smith’s 298 runs at the Oval in 1938. His 298 in the match at Brisbane in 1928/29 was only a few runs short of the 308 by Mailey at Sydney in 1924-25. Although over-bowled at Test level he still managed to retain his position as the leading bowler in all matches, averaging 71 wickets at 34.25, his nearest rival being T.W.Wall with thirty-seven at 31.05. Grimmett’s four Shield games produced twenty-six at 29.50, these included 5-49 against Queensland and immediately afterwards 5-116 against New South Wales. Queensland included Grimmett’s only hat-trick and the first by a South Australian in a Sheffield Shield. R.K.Oxenham, W.Rowe and F.J.Gough were all dismissed on 160 for the sixth, seventh and eighth wicket, only for the last two batsmen to secure victory by one wicket. Grimmett had the consolation of making the highest score of his career with an unbeaten 71 against New South Wales, putting on 93 for the 9th wicket with T.W.Wall.
