Hobbs, Sutcliffe, Hammond, Jardine, Hendren and Leyland provided extremely strong opposition, Hammond ending the series with a Test record aggregate in Australia of 905 runs at 113.12. In contrast Collins, Bardsley, Macartney, A.Richardson, Taylor and Mailey had all departed, leaving Australia with the prospect of having to discover several new players. No less than ten new players were selected during the Test series with Grimmett being the only bowler to appear in all five Test matches. Grimmett after claiming seven wickets in what was classed as a trial match, followed this with 6-109 against the MCC, virtually cementing his place in the first Test at Brisbane, in which Gregory, aged thirty-three, was Australia’s youngest bowler. England’s win by 675 runs, the biggest victory by a runs margin, was followed by a massive innings of 636 in the Second Test, which earned an eight-wicket victory. England gained narrower wins in the Third and Fourth Tests, both taking seven days to complete before Australia at last triumphed in the fifth, this taking eight days, the longest first class match in Australia. In the whole of the series, Grimmett managed five or more wickets on two occasions, 6-131 22
