Famous Cricketers No 96 - Clarrie Grimmett
twentieth Australian to achieve this debut feat. Grimmett however had him dismissed in his second innings, bowled off his pads, altogether claiming 8-57, his best analysis in the Sheffield Shield so far, dismissing ten batsmen in the process, McNamee being not out in both innings. In the return game, Bradman gave a stumping chance off Grimmett’s first delivery and was stumped by Hack in the second, having earlier giving him a simple stumping chance on 51. Grimmett’s final figures against New South Wales were match figures of 11-217. He took 10-186 in the following game against Queensland, his third five wickets in succession against Queensland and one further five wicket burst against Victoria in late December when he claimed 5-170, a game in which Ponsford made 336. Grimmett scored an unbeaten 61 in his first innings, adding 93 for the seventh wicket, followed by 54 against New South Wales and 60 against Queensland in his final match of the season. In doing so he achieved the highest batting average of his career, 42.85 and once again took most wickets for South Australia, his 42 wickets at 27.40 being the highest number by any Australian bowler in 1927/28.
