Famous Cricketers No 96 - Clarrie Grimmett
behind, Grimmett bowling 39 overs in claiming 5-88. England easily saved the game but Grimmett’s 2-59 off 29 overs, as opposed to Mailey’s 0-80 from 18 virtually guaranteed his place in the remaining two Tests. The Fourth Test was again drawn, being badly affected by the weather. The final Test at the Oval, which was played to a finish, was convincingly won by England. Mailey in his final Test earned nine wickets but Grimmett bowled eighty-eight overs in the match at approximately two runs apiece. He was adjudged by many to have bowled exceptionally well with ‘ poor fortune’, over and over again, his leg break consistently beating the batsmen. He continued to take wickets, his 11-126 against Gloucestershire prior to the Fifth Test being followed by a further five against Somerset and a final 5-68 against C.I.Thornton’s XI. He finished with final figures of 105 wickets at 17.68, ending both top of the Test bowling averages, taking 13 wickets at a cost of 31.84 and the tour averages, having bowled more overs, 824.3 overs than any other bowler.
