Famous Cricketers No 96 - Clarrie Grimmett
total in first-class cricket. His 10-122 against Western Australia was followed by 5-95 against Victoria, a further six against Western Australia giving him his second ten in the match. He was then selected for the Rest against an Australian XI, chosen to help select the side to visit England in 1926. Not only did he score 44 and 39, he registered his fifth haul of five wickets in four games, taking 5-91 in the second innings and becoming one of the thirteen chosen out of the final sixteen selected for the tour. The remainder of the season proved rather less successful, especially in his matches against New South Wales. The latter side, which won all four games, three by an innings and the other by 541 runs, in a side containing nine representative players, claimed 0-174 in Grimmett’s first innings. In the second encounter between the two sides a record aggregate of 1929 runs was scored in the match. However Grimmett was not disgraced, for bowling a total of 106 overs in the two innings, he returned figures of 4-192 and 6-202, his runs (394) and balls (848) being a record for a first-class match in Australia. Once again Grimmett in only his second full season was able to capture most wickets, 59 in all, seventeen more than his runner up A.A.Mailey. He had also bowled 483.2 overs, almost 182 more than any other bowler, although costing considerably more at 30.40, pushed up by figures of 56.80 against New South Wales.
