In those days this was accounted a good return for the county for its efforts. Before the season started, the club sold the freehold of its Leyton headquarters to the Army Sports Board. By becoming tenants at the ground the club had reduced its costs, but the heavy reliance on amateurs remained: the side had just three regular professionals. Against Middlesex at Leyton in August, even with Perrin absent, Essex still fielded nine amateurs. In terms of run aggregate, Perrin, aged 46 during the season, remained the leading amateur batsman, although his total was well behind C.A.G Russell, the leading professional. Until late July Perrin usually batted at four, but he then moved to fifth to accommodate the rather more dashing style of C.T.Ashton from Cambridge University. Wisden said that Perrin ‘could look back on his season’s work with extreme satisfaction’, adding that ‘again and again he played with a masterly ease that made all bowling look easy.’ The Cricketer thought Perrin ‘a wonderful player considering his age.’ He reached a thousand runs before the end of July, and finished the season just above thirtieth in the national batting averages. He converted four of his ten fifties into centuries, little different from his overall career pattern. Eleven of his thirty-two dismissals were leg before wicket, suggesting a certain immobility in front of the stumps. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 424.
