Wisden reported that the season had ‘brought no improvement in the fortunes’ of the club. Playing only in inter-county matches, they won only two matches out of eighteen, both against Sussex, and both with important contributions from Perrin. The club had the highest bowling average of any in the Championship. The additional professional was C.A.G.Russell, now 25, who displaced Perrin as the county’s leading run scorer. After mid-June, the regular inclusion of Russell pushed Perrin out of his position as three in the batting order down to four. 49
