Famous Cricketers No 95 - P.A.Perrin

thus finished the season fourth in the national averages, behind C.B.Fry, C.P.Mead and R.H.Spooner, his best ever return by that measure. Despite missing three matches, he scored more runs than any other Essex player. He performed particularly strongly in the middle part of the season: in one period in the course of six matches, he scored 716 runs at an average of 71.60, including, at Trent Bridge, a century in each innings, the third time he had achieved this. Wisden said ‘Perrin had indeed a splendid season’, although Cricket magazine several times referred to his play being dull or slow. Now thirty-five, he was not selected for either of the two Test trials, the first of which occurred only shortly after his two match ‘protest’ at Douglas’ selection as Essex captain. Assuming he did not refuse an invitation, he was unlucky not to play for the Gentlemen against the Players at Lord’s, in spite of his excellent form at that stage of the season. I.P.F Campbell, the Oxford University freshman who batted third for the Gentlemen in that match, scored a pair. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 295.
