Essex, now captained by J.W.H.T.Douglas, won eight of their eighteen matches, five of them at Leyton, and finished sixth in the Championship. The county was among the stronger batting sides in the Championship. Attendances at the county’s home matches were better than in the previous three years and this lessened the County’s financial worries. Because of his disappointment at not being awarded the captaincy, Perrin declined to play in the first two games of the season. He also stood down from the Surrey match at Leyton in late July when his place was taken by F.H.Gillingham. In twenty-seven innings, all at number three, he passed fifty on ten occasions and converted six into centuries, including one on return from his protest absence. He 46
