With perhaps a little luck and some better fielding, the side might have won three more matches, putting them in the top half of the table. The club’s financial difficulties continued unabated. Perrin’s contribution to the Championship outcome was modest, smaller than in any season until his retirement from regular play in 1926. After a good start against Cambridge University, he reached fifty only four times in twenty-one innings in Championship matches, the best being an ‘admirable’ 95 grafted over 225 minutes on a wet pitch at Leyton against Lancashire in June. Douglas, McGahey and Gillingham all scored more runs in Championship matches. Wisden said of Perrin that ‘he hardly maintained his position’: the first time there had been any suggestion that others might be selected in his stead. Now thirty-four, he went home in the middle of a match at Gravesend in June and then missed four further matches in July, because of lumbago. With its limited financial resources, Essex had no batsman who could replace Perrin in the number three position, and no one therefore to occupy the position and prevent his return when he recovered. He captained the side at Harrogate in mid-August, the first time for five years, in a match cut short by rain. In June, Perrin played in two minor first-class matches, in The Parks at Oxford and at Cardiff, rather lightweight affairs by his standards. His appearances in these matches and his membership of a touring side to Portugal at the end of the season suggest that his business interests had a lesser claim on his attention than in 1909.
