Poor attendances at home matches, and the abandonment of two consecutive games at Leyton in late June, added to the County’s financial difficulties. Wisden suggested that the poor performance on the field arose partly from the ‘depressed condition of the club’s affairs.’ The club’s batting and bowling averages were both well down the Championship rankings. Because of the claims of business and family matters, Perrin himself played in only fifteen matches. He scored only 728 runs, passing fifty in just four innings out of twenty-six. Despite this he was the County’s leading run scorer, although Wisden recorded that he ‘did not maintain his reputation.’ After a sound start against the Australians in May, he found it difficult to put together a good score until a 43
