The club’s bowling was less able than most to benefit from the difficult pitches which prevailed. Wisden used the word ‘dreary’ of the club’s performance. The Essex annual report said that ‘taken as a whole, the club’s batting was inconsistent and not up to the standard of recent years.’ Still batting regularly at three, Perrin scored more runs for Essex, 1,062 at 34.25, than any other batsman, but the Almanack said again that he ‘had not added to his reputation’, although he finished sixteenth in the national averages. His ‘superb’ off-driving was the finest feature of his game. Although he passed fifty in eight innings out of 38, Perrin scored only one century, 121, off Leicestershire at Aylestone Road, ‘hitting freely in front of the wicket.’ Against Middlesex at Leyton, he opened the batting in both innings for the first time, with F.L.Fane, when H.A.Carpenter was absent through injury. At the Canterbury festival in August, in a rain-interrupted game drifting to a draw, he opened the bowling in the Kent second innings, for the first time in a first-class match. W.G.Grace persuaded Perrin and his ‘twin’ to play for his London County side at Crystal Palace, and he got to bowl there too. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 118.
