The county drew seven of their eleven Leyton fixtures and Wisden referred to the ‘monotony’ of run getting there. S.H.Pardon’s editorial in the Almanack said that Leyton pitches were now ‘so superlatively good that it was almost impossible to get through four innings in three days.’ Shortly before the start of the season, Perrin had married and moved to a large new house at Muswell Hill. During the winter he had been elected to membership of the MCC. His first match for the club, against Nottinghamshire in early May, was the first time he had played first-class cricket for a side other than Essex since 1896. Wisden records his attendance at the MCC’s Annual General Meeting which was held during this match. For Essex, Perrin was successful, but not outstanding, alongside Carpenter and McGahey. Passing fifty in ten out of 41 innings, he finished the season just outside the top twenty in the national batting averages. His best performance came at Leyton in early August against Nottinghamshire, when Essex were left to score 255 to win in 165 minutes. He and F.L.Fane scored 235 off 66 overs in an unbroken second wicket stand, Perrin’s share being 108. In retrospect this was a year where Perrin, twenty-five during the season, could have progressed to selection for ‘showcase’ matches. Instead preference went to C.P.McGahey, W.G.Quaife and J.T.Tyldesley who were all selected for the Australian tour of 1901-02, and as Cricketers of the Year by Wisden in 1902.
