Famous Cricketers No 95 - P.A.Perrin

financial position, and its chairman, C.E.Green, told the ‘numerous company of members’ at the Annual General Meeting in December that ‘For the first season in the club’s history revenue has exceeded expenditure.’ Perrin, generally batting at three, was part of a solid phalanx of Essex batting talent, mostly amateur, which collectively rarely failed the county. Playing in every match, he again scored more runs than any other player for the county, and finished the season at twenty-first in the national averages. Cover Point in The Leytonstone Express and Independent , recognising his ability at last, described his 153 against Warwickshire as ‘a class exhibition from a master hand’. In the away match with Derbyshire, Perrin was involved in a dispute in his second innings when he edged a delivery which hit the wicketkeeper’s head and was then caught in the slips. He did not ‘walk’ and the umpire, R.O.Clayton, perhaps confused by the succession of events, gave him not out. In his memoirs, Derbyshire’s wicketkeeper, L.G.Wright, thought the catch ‘palpable’ and recorded ‘consternation’ at Perrin’s conduct. Perrin went on to score 58, which helped Essex to save the game. Despite the new prominence of Essex, Perrin seems not to have been invited to play in representative or festival matches. He also missed the opportunity of batting on his twenty-first birthday against the MCC at Lord’s, and perhaps making a big score, when towards the end of play on the day before, in the Essex second innings, he was dismissed for only 4.
