The county defeated Lancashire at Leyton in the first week of August, before a crowd of 15,000 on the last day of the match. They were thus top of the Championship table and needed to beat Surrey in the next fixture to take the title in only their third season in the competition. They lost by ten wickets inside two days. The local paper explained: ‘No doubt about it, man for man, they were opposing a stronger side.’ Essex finished the season in third place, a return not bettered until 1978.
