It was his third such expedition and differed from its predecessors in many ways. The 1950 squad had succeeded largely because of the positive contributions of Ramadhin and Valentine. The 1957 team lost the series conclusively mainly because Valentine had failed. But the 1963 side was no longer dependent on Ramadhin and Valentine for its triumphs. It profited from the abilities of such stars as Charlie Griffith, Wes Hall, Conrad Hunte, Lance Gibbs, Rohan Kanhai and Garry Sobers. Prospering under Frank Worrell’s leadership, the West Indies won 15 of their 30 first-class matches as against only two losses and defeated England 3-1 in the five-Test series. But Valentine’s own contributions were minimal. In 15 first-class matches, he recorded only 10 runs (ave 1.66) and 24 wickets (ave 34.25) and was consequently excluded from all the Tests. His finest effort came at Hove where he claimed 3/33 against Sussex in June. Noteworthy is the fact that he captained the side on four occasions when Worrell and Hunte (the regular vice-captain) were both resting. He led the West Indians to victory against Sussex at Hove and T.N. Pearce’s XI at Scarborough. He also helped them to stave off defeat against Hampshire at Southampton in late June by surviving a searching over from Derek Shackleton after nine wickets had fallen in their second innings.
