After playing in the first Test against Pakistan at Bridgetown, he was discarded by the selectors, who preferred to pin their faith on such young spinners as Lance Gibbs and Collie Smith. The season was dominated by Garry Sobers who registered 824 runs (ave 137.33), including an innings of 365* which was then the world record. Roy Gilchrist (21 wickets at 30.28) and Lance Gibbs (17 wickets at 23.05) were the most successful bowlers for the West Indies. In his solitary match, Valentine bowled tidily enough but could achieve nothing better than 3/124 from 45.2 overs. 24
