He bowled splendidly against the touring Indians to take 28 Test wickets (ave: 29.57) despite the unresponsive nature of the pitches. By the end of the campaign, he had lifted his tally to 93 wickets in only 16 Tests. His more famous partner, Sonny Ramadhin, had in the meantime captured 65 wickets in 15 Tests. The West Indies won the series 1-0, as most of the high-scoring matches were left drawn. Apart from Valentine and India’s Subhash Gupte, who took 27 wickets, the bowlers were dominated by the batsmen. Everton Weekes (102.28), Clyde Walcott (76.16), Polly Umrigar (62.46), Jeffrey Stollmeyer (59.00) and Vijay Manjrekar (56.75) all averaged in excess of 50 runs per innings. Against British Guiana in October, in his 39th match, Valentine scored 18 runs which was then the highest score of his career. He also claimed 9/200 from 73.5 overs to spin Jamaica to their third consecutive victory over the Guyanese. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 39.
