He led his side to the John Player one-day title, well deserved after three near misses. He scored four centuries spread through the season but managed only a further five fifties. His batting remained resolute and his continued astute captaincy led to his being selected to lead England on their winter tour to India and Sri Lanka, just reward for consistent cricket over twenty seasons and ten overseas tours involving first-class cricket.
