Little did he know that he was to lead his side to their first County Championship in the history of Essex County Cricket Club. The county’s 103rd season also saw them win the Benson and Hedges Cup. Under Fletcher’s shrewd captaincy the Championship was won by no less than seventy-seven points. He passed 1000 runs for the season by just six runs, but he also took nine wickets including his best bowling performance with 5-41 against Middlesex. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 500.
