He started the tour with a century in the team’s opening match but suffering from a sprained ankle, which was slow to recover, he did little else before the second innings of the last Test when he failed to find sufficient support in a chase for victory. As the tour moved on to Sri Lanka and to Australia for the Centenary Test, Fletcher was unable to find his form and was not to play Test cricket for a further four and a half years.
