He saved his best for Lord’s on two occasions. In the second Test against New Zealand, England required 298 in their second innings to avoid an innings defeat. After Geoffrey Boycott and Dennis Amiss had got the innings off to a good start Fletcher played a well balanced innings realising that runs as well as time were of importance. He batted for six and a quarter hours but also attacked when he saw the opportunity to take his side to safety. Against the West Indies he played another excellent innings but failed to stave off defeat as he was left not out on 86. He showed how to deal with short pitched bowling, where others failed, England slumping to 63-5. Derek Underwood stayed to add 47 for the last wicket before falling for 14.
