He began the tour in excellent form, struggled for runs mid-way through and then as his form showed signs of returning he broke a bone in his right hand. The break was not picked up immediately, thought to be ligament damage, and he played in the Adelaide and the second Sydney Tests under considerable handicap. His average of 34.50 in the four innings of those two Tests put his effort into true perspective, demonstrating yet again his tremendous fighting spirit. In all he played in six Tests, five in Australia and one in New Zealand but he managed only one 50. He captured his first Test wicket, that of Bill Lawry, in the First Test at Brisbane. In at the kill, it was Fletcher who caught Terry Jenner off Derek Underwood, at Sydney, to bring the Australians’ second innings to an end, and with it the Ashes.
