Although he played in only fifteen championship matches he again headed the averages for Essex and had notched up two championship centuries and one other by the middle of June. He scored a fourth in August. In between he played in the last four of five unofficial Tests against the Rest of the World XI, arranged to replace the cancelled visit by South Africa. He showed splendid form in these and as that form continued through the season he gained selection for the winter tour to Australia and New Zealand.
