He scored only 99 runs in eight innings against them, 47 of these in two Test matches versus New Zealand. Overlooked for selection for the three Tests against the West Indies in the early summer, Fletcher reminded the selectors of his absence with 134 not out against Northamptonshire in July and gained selection for the first two Tests against New Zealand only to be dropped for the third. A century at Chelmsford versus Glamorgan in late August was not enough to get him to 1000 runs in the championship, although he topped the Essex averages for the championship for the third season running. He also reached 1000 runs for the season in all matches for the seventh consecutive time.
