However this tour was also effected by political and financial strife as India withdrew and eventually the opportunity was taken to spend more quality time in Ceylon, as opposed to the normal stop-over. Four matches were played in Ceylon, one of which was first-class. Pakistan was a nightmare at times, rioting in Lahore and the withdrawal of police and the military in Dacca left an environment little suited to cricket. Fletcher came through the tour with great credit and played in three Test matches. At Lahore, in what was only his second Test, he shared the task of hauling England back into the match in the second innings, as they collapsed to 58-5, with a lead of only 155. He and Alan Knott put on 78 together and Fletcher was out eventually for 83, but more importantly he had occupied the crease for four hours. The tour ended at Karachi when the third Test was brought to an end on the third day, by rioting.
