ABOUT THE AUTHOR Derek Noble : Born in Essex in 1936, the author’s interest in cricket stretches back to the immediate post-war years when he watched Essex whenever possible. A director of a major brewing company, he joined the Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians when he retired in 1996. As he moved around the country during his working life he held either corporate or private memberships of the Somerset, Sussex and Yorkshire county clubs, but he never flagged in his support for Essex. He has watched first-class cricket in every county apart from Leicestershire, which omission he intends to correct at an early date.
