Keith Fletcher played in eleven of these. His average for the first innings in these matches was 15.2 in eleven innings, once not out, whereas it was 27.3 in ten completed second innings. These averages compare to 23.68 in the championship matches in which he played. Overall the experiment did not succeed and it was not repeated. Fletcher scored over 300 runs less in the championship than in 1965 but compensated in other matches for Essex and the MCC, making a century for Essex against the West Indian tourists at Southend. The innings included two sixes and fifteen fours with strokes all around the wicket. Fletcher took his first first-class wicket, for Essex versus Oxford University at Oxford, when he bowled ten overs, twice as many as in his first four seasons.
