Two matches were won easily by Chappell’s Australian team but rain spoiled a possible New Zealand win in Sydney when a young Richard Hadlee made an early impression. In domestic cricket Greg Chappell left South Australia to become captain of Queensland. South Australia finished bottom of the Shield table, although Ian Chappell’s century in each innings against Victoria was described by Wisden as one of the greatest feats on the Adelaide ground. South Australia lost in the semi-final of the K.O. competition, ironically against New Zealand, who were still appearing in this domestic competition despite being the season’s international opponents.
