A very wet start to the summer also disguised their abilities and they lost the First Test in cold and rain at Old Trafford. Chappell, though, had shown his adventurous spirit in the opening match at Worcester, when he responded to an early declaration by Norman Gifford by closing the innings at 68 for two. His reward was a six wicket victory. When he met Brearley in the Middlesex match at Lord’s the result was three declarations and another Australian victory. His low boredom threshold left him with five defeats in first-class matches, the most by an Australian captain in England since 1912, but Wisden editor Norman Preston praised him for “always seeking positive results when possible”. Stackpole was his vice-captain and his runs played a big part in Australia’s return to draw the series. They looked a far better side after the First Test and only a diseased pitch at Headingley which could have been tailor-made for Underwood held them at bay. The Lord’s Test match which was Chappell’s first win as captain was remarkable for Massie’s feat of taking sixteen wickets on his Test debut. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 152.
